ELINOR HOAGLAND EMMICK

Elinor Hoagland Emmick started her formal art training at what is now known as RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) in Rochester, NY. But it was while she was studying with the late Lars Hoftrup at Elmira College that she became deeply fascinated with watercolors.

Art was her calling, but her practical mother thought that in order for a girl to make a living in art, she must teach. So, Elinor pursued a degree in Art Education for five years at several colleges and art schools.

Ironically, a week after the graduation ceremonies at which she received that degree from Buffalo State Teachers College in 1938, she was married, and her teaching career ended before it began. Her husband, Frank Emmick, in her words, "thought teaching was a fate worse than death." So she traded a career in art education for parenthood, raising three children and becoming involved in business, as well as family and community affairs.

Widowed now and on her own, with her children grown and out of the nest, Elinor has picked up the paint brush again, and paints and teaches "as time allows". Her talented 4 year old granddaughter, Lauren Haft, is one of her most enthusiastic pupils.

Elinor is a member of the Penn Yan Art Guild and The Gallery of the Yates County Arts Council, and shows her work in area hospitals, galleries, and churches. Presently, she has a display at the Family Hair Care Salon in Lake Street Plaza, Penn Yan, and the First Baptist Church in Montour Falls.

She has a home on the shore of Keuka Lake, and says, "I feel blessed to live in this area where there is so much beauty to paint and children eager to learn.
